History was made at this year’s qualifying for The Open in what was a memorable occasion for golfing fans.
In a day full of drama and excitement it was an amateur golfer who stole the headlines playing at West Lancashire golf club in Merseyside on Tuesday.
Richard Teder, 20, became the first Estonian to qualify for a major golf tournament.
This extraordinary feat means he will get the chance to compete against the likes of Masters Champion Rory McIlroy and American Scottie Scheffler.
There are just seven professional golf courses in Estonia, in the UK, the number exceeds 2,500.
“It doesn’t feel real- qualifying for The Open is like a dream, he said.
“I’m glad I made it in. I couldn’t believe the shot went in in the playoff. It’s just an unbelievable feeling.
“Everyone’s dream is to play in a major tournament. I never thought I’d get the chance, but here I am!”
The spectacular scenes occurred after the 20 year old double bogeyed the 36th hole of his Open Championship Final Qualifier in which he was forced to play in a four man playoff for two spots at the upcoming championship.
Teder went on to chip in an eagle from 73 yards to book his spot at the 2025 British Open that will be played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
Finland's Oliver Lindell joined the Estonian after he birdied the second extra hole at West Lancashire.
Teder’s achievements means he rises to 91st in the World Amateur Golf Rankings with three wins over the last year.
His victories came in the pro Estonian National Stroke Play Championship and Latvian Open Amateur Championship last year, as well as the Estonian Match Play Championship in 2025.
Competing at the Open Championship will no doubt add to an already successful 12 months when he takes part in his first major competition next Thursday.
